Pinnacle launch a new Arkose gravel bike and it looks cheap, pretty and versatile
The new Pinnacle Arkose from Evans Cycles builds on the popularity of the reliable commuter and gravel bike, introducing more models to the range making it one of the most versatile bikes we've seen. From road riding, to commuting, to taking on off-road adventures the new 2019 Arkose is a reasonably priced bike that really could be one that 'does-it-all'.

The Pinnacle Arkose has always been a versatile bike with a gravel flavour, but its mainstay has been in the realm of the commuters. In fact, I (Rachael) used one solidly for six months to commute on not so long ago finding it a hardworking, reliable bike and one worthy of four stars according to road.cc.
What's new?
Aside from snazzy paint jobs, 2019 brings new models to the Arkose lineup, there are now two distinct versions one for road riders and one for the off-roaders. There are then two slightly more niche modes for adventure enthusiasts and hardcore commuters. We explain more below....
Arkose Dirt
The D1, 2 and 3 for (D for Dirt) are the Arkose bikes featuring specifications suited to off-road riding. These bikes are equipped with 48-32 tooth chain sets & wide ratio cassettes, WTB Riddler 700 x 45c tyres at three different price points ranging from £825 to £1300.
Arkose Road
For the road riders, Pinnacle offers the R1 and the R2. They say this bike is for the road rider "who see the surface of average UK lanes as closer to a cart track than a road… and despite the Road tag, it’s still for those who want the option to take that route less ridden from time to time". These bikes get 50-34 tooth road chain sets, WTB Exposure 700 x 30c tyres and more performance-based contact points.
Arkose X
Next up is the Arkose X, using the same frame as the other bikes above, the X is Pinnacle's showcase of versatility. Equipped with high volume 650b x 47c WTB Byway tyres, a SRAM Rival 1 group set plus our comfort and control-enhancing flared adventure bar, the X is a bike that Pinnacle says lets you take on pretty much any route open to you.
Arkose Alfine
The Arkose Alfine is Pinnacle's take on the ultimate commuter, super reliable Alfine hub gear, TRP Hydro’s for all weather stopping, and tubeless ready tyres and rims to minimize punctures.
What's so versatile?
Pinnacle say the new Arkose frame can fit either single or double chainring options, electronic or cable gears as well as full compatibility for wheel size (650B x 52C or 700C x 45mm) and rear axle type. With internal front & rear dynamo light routing and mudguard mounts as standard, the rider is given complete control to change their set-up to suit their needs.
Both options ( Dirt and Road) use the same frame and fork allowing riders to choose the wheels and gearing most closely matched to their needs.
There are also men's and women's versions across all the models aside from the Arkose X and the Alfine. The women's bikes get different geometry, mainly shorter seat tubes, shorter effective top tubes, slacker head angles, steeper effective seat tubes and lower bottom brakes compared to the men's versions. The women's bikes are available in sizes small to large, where the men's version also gets an XL frame.
How much?
The Arkose maintains its good value with a range of prices that tops out at just £1,400. It's worth noting that the cheaper frames don't get a full carbon fork, they get a carbon fork with alloy steerer, but other than that it's just the usual specification differences.
