2019 Gear of the Year: Jim Clarkson's best bits of bike kit

New at off-road.cc this year is our ‘Gear of the Year Top Picks’ award, this is where we pick five pieces of mountain bike or gravel gear that we reckon is indispensable. We’ll then bestow one of these items with the soon to be coveted award for gear we ‘can’t live without’.

Peaty's Disc Brake Cleaner review

Peaty's Disc Brake Cleaner is a really effective way of getting grease and squeaky filth off your discs, safe in the knowledge that it's not going to contaminate your pads. It's biodegradable, so it won't contaminate anything else – though it's not made from peat, in case you were wondering, but named for legendary downhiller Steve Peat. It's his brand.

Kali Pace helmet review

The Kali Pace is an entry-level lid that feels like it costs a lot more, and offers boosted protection via a ‘Low Density Layer’ that claims to reduce rotational forces. It's light, sharply styled, offers a traditional 'XC' rather than deep-dish 'enduro' sort of fit, and is pretty well-ventilated. There's a lot to like.

Crud Catcher XL Front Fender review

The Crud Catcher XL offers serious coverage for almost complete protection from flying filth. Despite this is only takes seconds to fit or remove, gives seemingly clog-proof clearance to front tyres and is flexy enough to last. It does leave your stanchions exposed, however, and it's best to add helicopter tape before fitting – but that, like its £30 tag, seems a small price to pay for superb performance.

DMR OiOi Saddle review

Endorsed by pro downhiller Ben ‘Deakinator’ Deakin, the OiOi is a comfy, gravity-focused saddle with rufty-tufty camo styling that's backed up by strong, no-nonsense design. While the shape is good enough for almost any kind of ride, the OiOi's not perfect – the fabric holds mud and water, and is a little abrasive too.

PRO Discover Saddle Bag review

The Discover Saddle Bag from PRO is a tidy, watertight seat pack that holds plenty, sits securely and is quick to mount. It could use a little more strapping on the roll-top closure, but other than that, it's great.

Alpinestars Tahoe WP jacket review

Alpinestars' Tahoe WP jacket is a casually-styled waterproof with a focus toward the bikepark end of things, with tough, heavy fabric and a solid build. However, its weather-proofing ability is ruined by a really poor cut, and it's very sweaty – the breathability could be a lot better.

KASK Caipi Helmet review

Though better known for roadie stuff, KASK should not be ignored for off-road lids, as this new Caipi demonstrates. It’s a well-fitting, easily adjustable, lightweight and good looking trail helmet, with plenty of venting that manages not to compromise coverage. There are niggles, such as with the chinstrap and buckle, but they're minor.

Cube X-Shell Long Finger X NF gloves review

The snappily-named Cube X-Shell Long Finger X NF is a waterproof, windproof and warm glove that effectively shields you from the grottiest weather. They're packed with decent detailing, have a good shape and fit, and come at a competitive price.

Alpinestars Tahoe Pants review

Alpinestars Tahoe Pants – or trousers if you're from the UK – are waterproof, rugged and simple in design. They offer few frills, but they're comfy, effective and breathe well enough for use in anything up to around 10 degrees. The waist is a bit saggy and loose, however, though that's the only real niggle.
