Rugged riding in the Welsh Valleys, with big climbs rewarded by big descents

The Penhydd trail is a good way to sample one of the red-graded trails at Afan without committing to the much longer routes on offer, making it ideal for anyone that's happy on the blue trails but wants to push their riding a bit more.

It shares the same climb from the Afan Forest Visitor Centre as Blue Scar, but climbs higher into the hills, rewarding that effort with extra singletrack and some more technical rocky sections on the way back down.

That extra height gain does mean the top sections are exposed to the full brunt of the Welsh weather, which can be significantly grimmer than in the valley bottom.
