We've given '5 cool things' a bit of a break recently but now we are back and better than ever with a whole host of new bits of kit on test. This week there are tools and a strap on accessory from Fix Mfg, a new FUNN dropper post and handy tools from Granite Design, clip-in shoes from Ride Concepts and glasses from Decathlon brand Rockrider.
Fix Manufacturing Wheelie Wrench and Strap On
The Wheelie Wrench and Strap On work together to hold a small tool to be placed on the strap of a bag or rucksack. The Wheelie Wrench part of the set up is a multi-tool containing a 2mm through 6mm hex bits (including 2.5mm), a T10 and T25 Torx bits, #2 Phillips screwdriver, Slotted screwdriver, Tire lever, 8mm box wrench,10mm box wrench, 15mm open ended wrench, Spoke wrenches and a Bottle opener. The 'Strap On' is a holster for the above tool which can then be fitted to a shoulder strap or waist strap of a rucksack or likewise. They come in two sizes for, different sized straps, we've got a narrow one on test and that'll fit 25mm straps, the wide will fit 38mm straps.
FUNN UpDown dropper post
The new UpDown dropper post is available in 150mm or 125mm lengths and in 30.9 and 31.6mm at the moment. It is a cable actuated, internally routed dropper with a neat under bar shifter style remote. We've got a 30.9, 150mm post in for review.
Granite Design Stash Tire Plug
Granite has launched the latest in it's Stash line of integrated tools, with a tubeless repair kit that neatly fits into the end of your handlebar joining their recently launched chain tool. Weighing a claimed 35g, Granite says you'll forget you have it until you need it. The tool is machined from aluminium and consists of a tyre reamer, a plug fork and four tyre plugs (2x1.5mm and 2.3x5mm) all contained in a neat screw-together unit. The kit will work with both open-ended and lock-on grips thanks to having to separate end plates included and the only requirement is that there's 18-21mm of space and a 10cm straight section on your bar.
Granite Design Stash Chain Tool
With the Tire Plug in one side of your handlebars, you'll need the Granite Design Stash Chain Tool on the other side. The CNC machined tool and is designed to be compatible with 9 ~ 12 speed chains, with quick-link storage too. Dimensions are 30 x 30 x 96mm (large cap) / 21.8 x 21.8 x 96mm (small cap) and it weighs a claimed 50g (incl. side cap).
Rockrider XCRace photochromic glasses
These are photochromic glasses for under £45 from the Decathlon brand Rockrider! The large coverage glasses changes tint in about 30 seconds, whilst the brand claims they take 45 seconds to fully clear. There is also the option to buy a set of identically shaped glasses for £35, this set comes with two interchangeable lenses (dark and very nearly clear).
Gloworm XSV front light
The Gloworm XSV is the new flagship front light from the Kiwi brand, pumping out 3400 lumens in a small package with an external battery and a wireless remote. Designed as a floodlight, Gloworm says it creates a larger and more even beam pattern than the XS (the 2500 light ). You can customise the settings, the whole package weighs a claimed 322g with a 1.5 hour run time on max power. We've also got a Glowoms X2 on test (1,700) which will also operate with the same wireless remote.
Ride Concepts Women's Traverse clipless shoes
With the in your face colour and general good looks, the Ride Concepts women's Traverse SPD shoes were hot on our 'must test' list. They have the same D3O insole tech as the Livewire and Hellion flat shoes we have on test, with a raised collar nearest the crank and a velcro strap to keep laces under control.
