New DT Swiss Ratchet Deg freehub boosts durability with modified 4-degree engagement ratchet design
It's been quite a while since we've seen a new freehub from DT Swiss but the brand has unveiled its latest Ratchet Deg system. In true DT Swiss fashion, it uses the classic ratchet design but this hub offers a four-degree engagement angle with 90 teeth, making this the smallest engagement angle in the brand's portfolio.

Most high-engagement freehubs depend on the tried-and-tested pawl system that utilises up to six small metal pawls that are pushed into teeth on the interior of a rear hub by springs. Of course, this system works rather well but DT Swiss claims its new Ratchet Deg system boosts durability in comparison by modifying its ratchet design.
This design means that all parts of the ratchet system are engaged, rather than a handful of pawls, so there's a more balanced load and higher reliability. But what's special about Ratchet Deg is that it brings high-engagement offering four degrees of engagement over 90 teeth. The brand has achieved this by building the system with the smallest engagement angle ever seen on this design.
The ratchets are made of steel and are bigger than previous models to cope with even greater power delivery than before. The new freehub then allows for hub bearing replacement without the requirement of special tools as this time around, the threaded ring doesn't need to be removed.
DT Swiss's new Ratchet Deg is available in two models, one classic build that's claimed to weigh 270g and can fit 12/148 and 12/157mm axles. It can accommodate six-bolt brake rotors and comes in 28- and 32-spoke configurations. On top of that, there are SRAM XD and Shimano Micro Spline freehub bodies to pick from.
As well as the Classic model, the brand offers a 240 Classic Deg Red in a limited run of 240 pieces. This gets all the features mentioned above but with a front hub with 110mm and 148mm spacing only. It's also available in a fetching red colourway.
Prices start at £160 for the 240 Classic Red front hub, then £355 for the standard 240 Classic Deg and 240 Classic Deg Red rear hubs.
