Fresh for 2022, Focus's 150mm trail bike, the JAM gets dressed in carbon and receives a more downhill focus. It also comes primed with the brand's own integrated storage solution and a few features you'll have seen on existing Focus models. Here's all you need to know.
- Best mountain bikes for under £3,000 - capable trail bikes that won't break the bank
- Five reasons why you should have a hardtail
- The best titanium mountain bikes you can buy
The new JAM is a product of consistent development of the older bike but without losing what the bike is truly all about. Thanks to the introduction of the littler traveled THRON, the bike gets a more downhill focus with updated geometry and is sorted with 150mm of suspension at both ends.
Speaking of, the fresh bike benefits from a 65° head tube angle, a 76° seat tube angle and the reach has stretched by up to 45mm to 510mm on the XL frame. The fork then gets a 44mm rake in the pursuit of clawing back some steering response that may have been lost by the slacker head tube.
All of that is adjustable thanks to a flip-chip found in the linkage. That'll steepen those angles by 0.5° and the reach grows by a further 5mm.
Along with the geometry, Focus has had a look at the JAM's suspension kinematic and has tweaked it to offer more progression and has moved from two phases, to just one that is just progressive. The brand says that the boosted progression is key in giving the rider feedback from the trail paired with a strong resistance to bottom-outs. Then, the shock is mounted using bearings for a boost in sensitivity.
The new bike also gets a horizontally mounted shock as seen on the alloy models which allows plenty of space for big water bottles, a lower standover, and access to the new I.C.S. One click of a cover unveils a downtube storage space, home to a handy bag that can easily be removed, says the brand.
As expected from Focus, the JAM comes sorted with the C.I.S design that helps towards a clean-looking cockpit.
The new JAM carbon comes in two models, the 8.9 which is priced at £4,800. This one comes with a Fox 36 Performance fork paired with a Fox Float X shock. There's then a Shimano Deore XT 12-speed drivetrain with SLX brakes, DT Swiss M1900 wheels, and tyres from Maxxis.
As for the second bike in the range, it will set you back £3,700 and that one comes equipped with a RockShox Revelation RC fork, a RockShox Deluxe Select shock and a SRAM SX 12-speed drivetrain. Then, the brakes also come from SRAM with the Guide Ts, there's a pair of Rodi rims on Novatech hubs and this one also gets Maxxis tyres.
Both bikes are available in four sizes from S to XL.
