The Focus SAM² becomes a more adjustable and versatile e-enduro bike

Configured as a dedicated e-enduro bike, the Focus SAM² is all about descending confidence. Rear suspension travel is 165mm, with a 38mm stanchion fork providing 180mm. Whether venturing into a steep natural trail or rolling off the start chute at an Alpine bike park, the SAM² has all the suspension travel you need for a single-crown fork e-bike to tame even the most technical trail features.

All SAM²s run coil shocks, which provide fade-free descending performance, regardless of how long, steep, or full of braking bumps your favourite enduro or double back trail is. The SAM² is agile, too, says the brand, despite having so much suspension travel, because it rolls a mullet wheel size set-up, with a 29-inch wheel up front and a 27.5-inch wheel at the rear.
Tyre choices are Schwalbe’s proven Magic Mary in Super DH casing, with the ADDIX Ultra Soft compound, in 2.4in width. For riders who want a bit more air volume and traction patch, the SAM² 6.8 build features Maxxis 2.5in tyres, an Assegai, DoubleDown, 3C MaxxGrip up front, and Minion DHR II, Downhill, 3C MaxxGrip at the rear.
Big brakes, heavy-duty coils, and adjustable geo
Enduro e-bikes can be taxing on brakes, and product planners at Focus have gone big for the SAM²’s stoppers, fitting 220mm rotors front and rear, with four-piston calipers throughout. The entry-level 6.8 builds feature Shimano Deore stoppers, mid-grade SAM² 6.9’s use TRP DH-R EVO Pros, and the premium 6.0 build kit uses SRAM’s Maven Silvers.
Focus's frame designers have prioritized coil-shock optimized kinematics for the SAM². Coil spring weights are size-specific, with the smallest SAM² using a 350lbs spring, size medium upping to 400lbs, with the large frame getting a 500lbs coil, and the extra-large build using a stout 600lbs shock. All builds are graded for a total system weight of 150kg.
Kitted with special headset cups, the SAM² head angle can be tweaked by a full degree, from 64.5- to 63.5-degrees, when you need a slacker front end for those exceptionally steep and treacherous double black diamond descents. The adjustability isn’t limited to head angles, but also other areas of the SAM²’s geometry.
Chainstay length can dramatically impact bike feel, with longer chainstays providing more stability, while shorter chainstays enhance agility. With SAM², riders can choose how they want to balance rear-end stability and agility thanks to an integrated flip-chip that can vary the SAM²’s chainstay length from 441 to 448mm, depending on rider choice. The factory recommendation is to run the shorter chainstays on the size S and M versions, with the 448mm chainstay length recommended for the L and XL bikes.
Wide bars and battery extenders
An interesting design aspect of the SAM² range, symbolic of how downhill-focused these new enduro e-bikes are, is the cockpit set-up. A wide 800mm handlebar creates all the leverage riders need to control direction changes and terrain deflections at high speeds.
Stem length is compact, at only 40mm, and unlike some of the other Focus e-bikes, there’s no large function status display, with only a compact integrated e-bike system display as part of the top tube. The Focus product logic with this is that SAM² riders don’t want the distraction of a large multifunction e-bike display as part of their cockpit, considering that they most often are descending trails of consequence, which require all the concentration to be on scanning terrain and controlling rider inputs.
Like the Focus THRON² and JAM², the new SAM² integrates Bosch’s Performance Line CX motors. Battery spec choices are 600 or 800Wh, with a 250Wh range extender on offer, creating the possibility for 1050Wh total battery system capacity on the new SAM².
Prices start at 5,700€ and go up to 8,500€.
