Easton's EC90 ALX gravel wheels get the aero treatment
Gravel is getting faster and the genre is ushering in attributes usually reserved for Tarmac-based machines. Easton has set out to compensate for the inefficiencies of fat gravel tyres and balance aerodynamics, compliance and weight with its new EC90 ALX wheelset.

One thing's for sure, greater aerodynamic efficiency can make you faster and cut through the air more effectively. But for gravel, there's a little more to consider as the larger volume tyres create greater air and wind resistance – something Easton says can counteract the benefits of typical aero rim design, rendering them useless.
Deeper rim profiles typically aid aerodynamics but, for gravel, it's about balancing compliance, too. A deep rim might cut through the air but added weight will offset those gains. That's on top of an increase in stiffness that results in a harsh ride and the instability that deep rims can create.
Easton's EC90 ALX is slated to hit that balance with a 36mm rim depth that's claimed to provide an aerodynamic benefit without adding too much weight. The brand also reckons that this depth balances a hint of compliance and manages instability caused by wind.
The 24mm internal width is another measurement chosen in the name of aero gains. The wider rim profile will accommodate larger gravel tyres from 33 to 50c and the hookless rim design bolsters impact resistance.
The new EC90 ALX carbon rims are laced to Easton's Vault hubs inspired by the brand's Tour de Frame-winning road hubs while benefitting from its mountain bike know-how. For durability, they get wide-set bearings that claim to distribute force better for improved bearing longevity.
The six-degree engagement freehub uses a reverse-drive ring mechanism to help it withstand torque better and again, boost durability. There's also serious sealing to help the wheels cope with horrific conditions.
As for spokes, these wheels benefit from 24 Sapim CX-Ray spokes at the front and rear wheels. The EC90 ALX wheelset is available in 700c only, is claimed to weigh 1,492g and is compatible with Centerlock brake rotors with a maximum size of 180mm.
