Panaracer has overhauled the GravelKing line-up and the X1 is claimed to be the fastest-ever GravelKing. But while it might be the fastest tyre Panaracer offers, it can’t match other race-focused options. Instead, the X1 TLR offers well-rounded performance in almost all areas, without excelling in one particular area.

Panaracer GravelKing X1 TLR tyres – Technical details
Panaracer was one of the first companies to produce tyres specifically designed for gravel riding, with the tyres first manufactured in 2014. As the discipline has grown, they became ubiquitous on new bikes with their various forms often being the go-to tyre. The previous GravelKing versions remained unchanged for years, standing up against new brands and models being brought into the market, and with the latest technology and development being used, they have been surpassed in almost all areas.
Panaracer has now overhauled all models with new technologies and compounds, with each tyre available in different sizes. The GravelKing X1 is available in three versions, with the X1 TLR we have the middle version, in addition to the X1+, featuring a dual-layer of the new TuffTex puncture protection, and the R-Line with a slimmer single puncture layer.
The GravelKing X1 TLR is priced at £55, with X1+ and R-Line versions at £65.
The sizing for all versions has also changed, with the old 32mm, 38mm and 43mm out, and now things are much simpler, with the X1 available in 5mm increments from 35mm to 45mm. Claimed weights are 420g, 480g and 560g – our test tyres measured a very close 569g.
The new X1 tyres have a bead specifically designed to work with hooked and hookless rims, and fitting was very easy. Fitted to a pair of e*thirteen rims with 21mm internal rim width. No tyre levers were needed, and they inflated with just a track pump. Despite a relatively narrow rim width, the tyre measured 47mm actual width.
Panaracer GravelKing X1 TLR tyres – Performance
Panaracer claims the GravelKing X1 is the fastest tyre it has made and they certainly feel smooth, with the near-continuous centre tread helping to give a quiet ride on all surfaces. In terms of speed, they feel okay and although not a scientific test, they don’t feel as quick or reactive as more race-focused options – including the Schwalbe G-One R and Challenge Gravine. If speed is a main concern, the R-Line version, with a slimmer and lighter casing is likely to be a faster option, although, at the point of testing, there are no third-party rolling resistance test results available to compare.
The GravelKing X1’s have been tested across a full range of surfaces and conditions, and the overall performance is balanced, without any areas where they feel truly specialised or disappointing. They work best on damp soil or areas that are firm and the tyre can bite, with these conditions giving good traction and cornering grip.
Dusty or loose over hard conditions are areas where the GravelKing X1 can struggle, and one key reason for this is the firm, full-width puncture protection TuffTex casing that impacts ride feel, giving less sense of when the tyre is beginning to slide. Things did get better and trust in front-wheel grip improved.
The closely packed tyre knobs mean that mud can stick inside, and they don’t clear quickly in gloopy mud areas, but they are surprisingly tenacious with grip and traction.
Despite testing the widest size and the extra actual width (measuring 47mm), comfort is not an area where they excel, although running at sub-30psi pressures. While the TuffTex casing impacts comfort and feel, it has proven to be impervious to punctures, despite some rough tracks and big rock-to-rim impacts where I was sure a puncture had occurred. This assurance boosted my confidence that the X1 will be a durable and dependable tyre.
Panaracer GravelKing X1 TLR tyres – Verdict
The options for do-it-all gravel tyres are growing, and it is a competitive area for the updated GravelKing X1. It doesn’t have the speed, grip or feel of the Vittoria Mezcal Gravel Endurance which costs £5 less but the GravelKing is available in a wider range of sizes.
The WTB Vulpine is another fast and smooth option and is now available in 700x40 size.
While Panaracer has uplifted the entire range of gravel tyres offered, the GravelKing X1 TLR sits in the middle of the range and feels more of an update than a revolution. For riders who want a tyre for all surfaces, it ticks the box and will be a good option for riders who frequently suffer from punctures.
