Shimano updates gravity and all mountain shoe lineup - Shoes get new Ultread compound
Coming out just in time for 2022, Shimano has updated the gravity and all-mountain range of SPD and flat pedal shoes. The new GR9 shoes come sorted with an all-new rubber compound at the sole with all shoes in the range coming with heaps of features. Read on for all of the details.
- Best trail and enduro clipess shoes you can buy
- The best clipless mountain bike pedals ridden and rated
Leading the range in terms of gravity focus is the GR9. It's Shimano's flat-soled shoe that's designed for downhill and enduro riding. New for this year, it's built with the brand's new Ultread rubber compound and with a new tread pattern. The tread itself is shaped to correspond perfectly with a pedal's pins, offering enhanced grip, says the brand.
That's not all, as the heel and toe portions of the tread get a specific pattern that's supposed to offer plenty of grip while talking.
As for the GR9's actual build, it's made using synthetic leather with mesh inserts for breathability. Plus, there's an ankle guard, toe protection, and a lace closure.
The new GR9 shoes come in a male fit, ranging from size EU 38-48, and weigh in at a claimed 385g per shoe. They're also designed to work specifically with the new Shimano Deore and Saint pedals.
Rounding off the GR series is the GR5 which remains the same as last year's model.
Moving on to the AM series, it's Shimanos SPD shoe for downhill and enduro riding.
First off, the AM903 gets improved dust protection thanks to a tongue cover to keep the quick lace system away from dirt, along with a wider instep strap to add more security to the shoe. Then, you'll find an extended pedal channel and the sole's contact area is optimised for Shimano's PD-M821 pedal.
Like the GR series, the AM903 gets a heel and toe tread for traction off of the bike.
Coming from last year's version, the AM903 is built with a raised padded ankle collar, a sidewall sole and a molded toe cap to add a hint of protection. With all of that, there's a waterproof coating on the outer of the shoe and the inner is made to dry quickly.
Joining the AM903 is the AM5 with a skate shoe inspired design and a quick lace but it doesn't get the tongue cover of the AM903.
The AM903 is claimed to weigh in at 415g per shoe and the AM5 is set to weigh 440g. As for sizes, they come in sizes EU 38 up to EU 48
The new Shimano GR9 shoes will cost £140, as will the AM9 but the AM5 will set you back £80.
