For 2020 the ME5 and ME7 trail shoes from Shimano see a refresh. At the forefront of the brands thinking is on bike performance mixed with off-bike comfort and grip.

Building upon an already well-received shoe (see our review here), the ME7 sees a host of updates this time around. It's the brand's race orientated shoe that promises lightweight, excellent pedalling efficiency and armour that suits the demands of enduro racing.
As before the ME7 gets a Michelin designed sole but for this iteration, it gets a bit of a redesign. It uses a dual-density rubber outsole for greater durability and slip-resistance.
This time, the ME7 gets a new buckle design. It's reverse mounted and low profile to keep it away from any potentially damaging obstacles.
As before, the shoe sees in the Torbal midsole which flexes torsionally for a bit of extra comfort while rattling down descents.
To keep the shoes where they're supposed to be, the ME7 keeps the ratchet and speed lacing system that's seen on the old model.
The ME7 is claimed to weigh 400g in an EU 42 and is an 8/12 on the stiffness spectrum.
The ME5 benefits from a touch of the trickle-down effect but it's designed with a different mix of pedalling efficiency, grip and comfort. It's designed for a rider who doesn't need all of the bells and whistles that the ME7 offers, while still being a top performer.
Most notably, rather than the ratchet and speed lace closure, the ME5 gets a Boa L6 dial for easy micro-adjustment with a closure cap to save it from opening after a rock strike or crash.
The ME5 misses out on the Michelin tread but instead goes for a Shimano own design, which promises superior traction in wet conditions.
As with the ME7, the ME5 gets the same Torbal midsole and armour in all of the right places.
The ME5 is claimed to weigh in at 326g in an EU 42 and it's sole sits at 8/12 on the stiffness scale. Both shoes are available in sizes EU 38-50.
Both of the new Shimano shoes are available from September 2020 with the ME7 set to cost £180 and the ME5 £140.
