British Cycling Federation in court after death of spectator at Welsh mountain bike event
The British Cycling Federation, an official and a marshal have appeared in court in relation to the death of spectator Judith Garrett at a Borderline UK DH Series event in Llangollen in 2014.
Judith Garrett was hit by a competitor’s bike while watching her boyfriend race at Tan y Craig Farm in Llangollen on August 31. She sustained head injuries and was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke, but died the following day.
The Daily Post reports that the British Cycling Federation has been charged with failing to conduct its undertaking in such a way as to ensure the health and safety of people attending.
Race official Michael Marsden is alleged to have failed to conduct the event in such a way that people were not exposed to risk. It is alleged that he failed to ensure the safety of spectators and also failed to provide marshals with adequate training.
Marshal Kevin Duckworth is alleged to have failed to ensure that his health and safety duties were complied with and is also accused of failing to report Garrett’s death.
Both prosecution and defence said the case should be dealt with in the crown court.
District Judge Gwyn Jones sent the case to Mold Crown Court, where the case will be listed for a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 29.
