The Air Tool Comp is Specialized's addition to the floor pump market. Favouring ergonomics over fancy internal gimmicks, the brand has created a comfortable, stable and reliable unit that’s capable of filling tubeless tyres, but not without breaking a sweat.
Made with a large hardwearing steel base bolted onto an aluminium shaft the Air Tool Comp is built to last. It also comes with a spare rubber head seal should the pre-installed one wear or get lost. The handle and head are made of a reasonably sturdy-feeling plastic. The only parts of this pump that I feel a lack in quality are the rather narrow hose holders by the handle and the gauge looks a little cheap.
The most impressive feature of the Air Tool Comp is its ergonomics. Specialized have really gone to town to make this pump super comfortable to use with its winged handle, low profile, wobble-free base and contoured head.
The head itself is big compared to other pumps but that is in the name of comfort. It is also has a grippy texture moulded into it which is a nice addition. The locking lever is big and ergonomically moulded as well which makes using it super easy. Like many other pumps, the head uses a valve auto-selecting feature but unlike others, this one works reliably.
Specialized has designed this pump to deliver 365cc of air per stroke which makes it more suitable for narrower tyres but the brand promises it to be a versatile option, great if you ride gravel or road as well as mountain. I’ve been using this pump with 2.3” mountain bike tyres and it does a fine job but it does take some elbow grease to seat tubeless tyres. If you only ride mountain bikes, Specialized does offer a high-volume model that delivers 508cc of air per stroke.
For the price, there are better options if you need something that’s more discipline-specific but none of them have such well-considered ergonomics. If you’re looking for a do-it-all pump and don’t mind putting in the extra stroke to seat a tubeless tyre the Specialized Air Tool Comp is a good choice.
