The Merida Travel Framebag is tough, simple and very easy to fit thanks to a good range of adjustment across the top straps. While the fabric and zips are waterproof, however, the seams can leak in heavy rain, and overall it doesn't quite match up to the competition.

Our medium frame bag proved a great fit even on a size Small frame, leaving space for a bottle while not wasting any space above. Total volume on the medium bag is 4.6 litres; there's a large version that holds 5.4 litres.

The main exterior is 210D ripstop nylon, which offers a lightweight but waterproof fabric design. The edges touching the frame are a different material, chosen as the thicker material should improve durability and prevent wear.

When full, the ripstop can bulge out beyond its 7cm claimed size, as the fabric is fairly thin and there's nothing to maintain its shape. If you ride with knees close to the top tube, it may interfere slightly.

The bag has a large internal pocket with waterproof zips on both sides. Inside is a separate section with many smaller pockets, but should you want a single large bag this part comes out easily – it's on Velcro.

The top of the bag features a row of loops to allow the Velcro straps to sit in just the right place on your particular frame, which is handy. 

The down tube and seat tube straps are a similar type and work well, though they're not adjustable – they're long enough, though, to fit most bikes and frame designs.

While the fabric is waterproof, the sealed seams are not so good. Enough heavy rain made its way though during testing to dampen the insides. While it's standard advice to fit all water-sensitive kit in a dry bag, it is still a disappointment knowing it won't hold up in a storm.

While the performance and fit is okay, the waterproofing is disappointing and best thought of as splashproofing. Also, the Merida Travel Framebag is competing against top brands such as Lezyne and Altura on price – and it just can't match them for quality or sophistication.
