Perfect for cold winter days on the bike, the Gore C5 Womens Windstopper Trail Camo Hooded Jacket is warm, comfortable and stylish on and off the bike. The hood flaps around somewhat though but it’s a small moan about what is otherwise a superb outer layer.

Gore says the jacket is designed for commuting and trail riding alike, it’s the latter I used it for, taking it out in inclement weather on muddy trails on both the mountain bike and the gravel bike. The jacket does what it says on the tin, its windproof, water repellent and breathable too, although with its ‘medium thermal protection’ it is certainly on the warmer side of things.

The fabric camo fabric is smooth with a silky like outer quality both inside and out meaning it sits well against other layers. The camo is also great to hiding the mud, it washes well and is ready to wear casually with no residual mud splatters in sight.

The fit is close but not super fitted which I really liked for a winter jacket, I wore a size small, finding there was plenty of space for other layers. The elastic cuffs are soft and keep out the draft as does the long lower hem. I found I needed to use the hood drawstrings to keep the hood in check when riding which means questionable style points but at least it stopped the large hood flapping around. The wide neck isn't that cosy either, another reason to winch it in and keep out the draughts. 

Elsewhere there is a two way front zip, two concealed and roomy hand pockets, a chest pocket, plus one on the forearm for sneaky valuables and small reflective logos on the rear.

For riding in the C5 jacket is pretty unnoticeable, aside from the hood. The sleeves are plenty long enough, the hem sits low and covers the back well in a cycling position and the smooth fabric means you can move about on the bike well unrestricted. The windstopper membrane ensures wind is kept out however fast you are descending or it is blowing and if it does start to rain the DWR coating on the jacket keeps off the showers, even a couple of washes in. The jacket is warmer and more robust than a regular windproof jersey though and it's one best left for colder temperatures.

This tech and warmth come at a cost though, £179.99 to be precise and we’re guessing this might be pretty steep for most. If you do splash the cash though you’ll be rewarded with a jacket that looks as good on the bike as it does off it, it warm, tough and in our experience of other Gore gear, long lasting too.
