Topeak's Hexus X updates an already award-winning format to store more tools and secure twin tyre levers. Its extended range – in a reasonably small and light package – makes the Hexus X extremely versatile and, at £23, it's seriously good value.

Within its engineering-grade polymer body you find 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8mm Allen key bits with T15 and T25 Torx adaptors. There's also a T30 bit, a #2 Phillips screwdriver, a chain tool, two tyre levers, 14/15g spoke wrenches, a steel chain hook and a Presta valve core remover.
That's a serious amount of kit for something that measures 9x4x2.5cm and weighs 170g. To make this possible, Topeak has been pretty clever with the tool storage of the Hexus X.
While the most commonly-used tools hinge in the usual way, popping off the tyre lever reveals more stuff on three spigots moulded into the frame. Here's where you find the T15 and T25 Torx, plus the chunky 8mm Allen.
On the very same tyre lever is a bonus 4mm Allen. It's here mainly as the lever for the chain tool, but the Torx adaptors fit it too, which eliminates a bit of faff.
The tyre lever offers plenty of leverage when attached to the chain tool; more than most dedicated designs, in fact. The only negative is that the tool isn't compatible with Campagnolo 11sp hollow pin chains... sorry, closet roadies. The chain hook is a nice touch though, making a potentially fiddly job that bit easier.
My only qualm with the levers is that they can be a bit tough to remove. You have to claw at them with your fingertips, which gets even trickier with winter gloves on.
Used on tyre beads the levers are really strong (they're also engineering-grade polymer), and show absolutely no flex. I did wonder if the 4mm Allen built into one lever would dig into my palm, but it proved to be out of the way enough not to cause issues.
While it may not be the prettiest of tools, the matt polymer is comfy in the hand and provides good grip. Don't let its plastic build fool you into thinking it's not particularly strong. The Hexus X stands up to heavy jobs, such as pedal removal, without any sign of stress.
This multitool even enjoys some parts support. If you lose or break a lever or lose a Torx adaptor, Topeak sells each of the removable bits separately.
The Topeak Hexus X is an excellently versatile multitool. It has more bits than I think I will ever use, but if a problem arises, I'm happy knowing the Hexus X will almost certainly have my back. Its size, weight and array of tools have kept it in my bag or pocket on most rides since I've had it. Priced at only £23, it's brilliant value too so if you're on a budget – or just looking for a very well-equipped tool – don't overlook the Topeak Hexus X for anything sparklier.
