Garmin has just launched a brighter and better Edge 1050 cycling computer
Developed to allow for greater interactivity, tracking, hazard warnings and convenience on a ride, the Edge 1050 features a bright 3.5in screen and metal buttons.

Product developers at Garmin know that screen resolution, contrast, and legibility matter in direct sunlight. Much of the brand’s R&D investment with Edge 1050 was about creating an information and function interface that could be confidently glanced at without confusion.
Not all riders are gentle when using menu select buttons, and the Edge 1050’s metal buttons should last longer and remain true to their function than conventional plastic buttons.
Community riding features
Beyond the Edge 1050’s sleek appearance, luminescent screen and robust menu buttons, what about the software that keeps you en route, to reach your destination? Garmin’s product people realise that community is a thing for all riders, and the Edge 1050 has GroupRide updates like mid-ride messages, live locations and incident alerts.
Beyond the group and community riding features, Edge 1050 also caters for the competitive edge (no pun), with in-ride leaderboards. There are also novel rewards like max speed, most time pedalling and being most communicative on the GroupRide chat.
Traditional rider performance metrics like adaptive training plans, VO2 max and Tacx smart trainer compatibility will satisfy the data demands of those weekend warriors who are totally committed to their training.
Active safety
Real-time safety awareness is a powerful tool for advanced cycling head units, like the Edge 1050. Potholes, fallen trees, and other road hazards can be flagged by riders, pinging as on-screen alerts, making your Sunday coffee ride that much safer and more enjoyable.
How much of a battery and device endurance burden do all these new features add? If you’re using everything frequently, Garmin claims the Edge 1050 will be good for 20 hours of riding. Trim the features with energy-saving mode, and you can enjoy 60 hours of Edge 1050 functionality – ideal for solo adventure rides when touring on a gravel bike.
The Edge 1050’s contactless payment function prevents the need for crumpled cash or bent credit cards, and it also has a built-in speaker – which can function as a warning bell to pedestrians.
Priced at £649.99, the Garmin Edge 1050 is a comprehensive cycling head unit, adaptable to any rider's needs – road, gravel or mountain.
