Born in Scotland, Simon moved to London aged seven and now lives in Cambridgeshire with his miniature schnauzer, Elodie. He fell in love with cycling one Saturday morning in 1994 while living in Italy when Milan-San Remo went past his front door. He's been news editor at road.cc since 2009. He doesn't get to ride his Colnago as often as he'd like, and freely admits he's much more adept at cooking than fettling with bikes.

Video: Ouch! Mountain bikers attacked by swarm of bees

Here's a video that will make you wince - a group of mountain bikers in Spain who were attacked by a swarm of bees.

Just looking at the footage is painful, and we reckon the fact that two of the riders dumped their bikes altogether shows how intense it was.

The incident happened in March during the Tropical Bike Motril competition in Spain.

José Miguel Rodríguez, the vice-presidente of the organising group, was stung 80 times and had to be treated at a hospital in Granada, as did four other competitors.

"I've never suffered so much," he said.

Video: Bear charges at mountain biker

Among the challenges you don’t want on a downhill mountain bike run is a brown bear charging at you – but that’s what happened to this rider.

We’ve seen similar videos before, with the bear’s charge typically triggered by a sow looking to protect its young, and previous films always from the US or Canada.

This footage, however, was shot in Slovakia, so even if you’re in Europe, as the man in Hill Street Blues said, “Be careful out there.”

Yeah, showing our age.

Tom Pidcock wins Olympic mountain biking gold for Team GB in Tokyo

Team GB’s Tom Pidcock dominated today’s mountain bike race at Tokyo 2020 to win Olympic gold, but the much-anticipated showdown with Mathieu van der Poel failed to materialise as the Dutch rider crashed early on.

Pidcock, who turns 22 on Friday, put in a blistering short opening circuit after starting from the fourth row of the grid to move up to the front of the field ahead of the seven 4.1 kilometre laps of the main course.

Fundraiser launched to cover Scottish mountain biker’s £40k medical expenses

The family and friends of a Scottish mountain biker who was seriously injured during an Enduro World Series event in Switzerland last month have launched a crowdfunder to raise £40,000 to cover his medical expenses.

Darren Scott, aged 50 and from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, sustained injuries to his back and pancreas when he crashed while riding the event at Crans-Montana on 11 September. He was airlifted to hospital and remains there, but a problem with his insurance cover means he faces a medical bill of up to £40,000, including repatriation costs.
