Lezyne make products that ooze quality and this Alloy Over Drive track pump is no different. Aside from it’s good looks the pump delivers a high volume to efficiently inflate larger volume tyres.
If all my money was to be spent on aesthetically pleasing products you’d be able to take my money for this track pump time and time again. The oversized aluminium barrel and base are simplistic with a minimalist vibe, the large gauge is unassuming yet practical and it is topped out with an ergonomic, smooth wooden handle, that looks like it will age like a well ridden Brookes saddle.
The Alloy Over Drive has a max pressure of 60psi, plenty for mountain bikes but Lezyne also do a road version taking that figure up to 225psi. Tyre diameters of 2.5” and 2.6” are the target market of the Lezyne Alloy Over Drive pump – good for the wider rims and tyres increasingly found on test bikes.
Lezyne use a screw on system (the L-shaped ASB 1 chuck) to attach the chuck to the valve, the chuck can be flipped over to convert from Presta to Schrader in one simple action. As you can imagine fixing the chuck to the valve involves screwing the head down over the valve which is a time consuming task when compared to the clip on and go attachments of other pumps on the market. It does negate any air escaping though, its super secure with no wriggling of the connector to get it attached.
After pumping and before unscrewing the chuck you’ll also need to release the air from the hose by pressing the small button on the side of the chuck. If you don’t it bears the possibility that when removing the chuck you will also remove the valve core with it, thus releasing (and quickly) all the air you have just inflated the tyre with.
Continuing on the subject of the valve core, the chuck also features a neatly integrated valve core wrench meaning you can tighten or remove that valve with the pump if you need to.
Lezyne also offer the ASB2 chuck to be purchased separately (£17) to replace the chuck currently on the pump. This chuck operates in a different way, attaching to the valve with a quarter turn rather then screwing on.
Moving on, the long hose supplied with the Alloy Over Drive pump makes getting set up to pump easy. The action of the pump is smooth and it does indeed put a large volume of air into the tyre at each pump. The chuck is able to swivel and move as the hose moves meaning no unnecessary tugging on the valve or twisted hoses.
The base is sturdy and also weighty at the bottom meaning this pump isn’t top heavy so doesn’t fall over easily, even on uneven surfaces. I tested the gauge with a digital pressure reader (to the nearest whole number) and found it to be reasonably accurate given I was reading from an analogue gauge with a relatively thick needle.
The Lezyne Alloy Over Drive track pump combined good looks with a sturdy feel and efficient high volume action all in a package costing £69.99, that’s expensive for a track pump but that said the large volume available will certainly be worth the expenditure if you find yourself changing tyres on a regular occasion.
