Twrch - named after an enchanted boar from Welsh mythology - is the original cross-country loop at Cwmcarn. The fairly technical first climb sets the tone for the rest of the trail, with a rocky and almost entirely singletrack climb up the valley before you haul yourself up the very top, via some jumpy fun at the upper bike park-style section and a fun, fast descent that leads to open views all the way to the Bristol Channel before you twist all the back way down in the trees.

It's pretty rough, rocky and rooty in places, so while it holds up well in wet weather it's pretty rugged and exposed in sections.

Jon was previously the editor here at off.road.cc. Whether it's big days out on the gravel bike or hurtling down technical singletracks, if it's got two wheels and can be ridden on dirt, then he's into it. He's previously been technical editor at BikeRadar.com, editor at What Mountain Bike Magazine and also web editor at Singletrackworld.co.uk. Yes, he's been around the houses.
