The Bombtrack Beyond+ 1 promises to be a plus tyred adventure bike capable of some rigid trail bike fun when the bags come off. We've just got one in for test and it looks like just the ticket for some big, remote cycling adventures.
We took a brief look at the drop bar version of the Bombtrack Beyond last year but other than a few light rides, unfortunately, the stars didn't align and we never got the chance to put the 'Land Rover' of the adventure bike world to the test. With the weather now in our favour, the new Bombtrack Beyond+ 1 looks right up our street.
The Beyond+ 1 is a different bike to the regular Beyond, with the latter sporting drop bars and steeper and shorter geometry to match. The Beyond+ 1 is a flat barred bike that houses 27.5"x2.8" tyres rather than 29er rubber on the regular Beyond, although if you fancy it there is enough room for 29x2.5" tyres here too. Plus tyres seem to be the volume of choice where serious bike packers are concerned. We spoke to Shand at Bespoked Bike Show just last week where they told us they changed up their new Tam to use 29+ tyres for increased comfort levels and grip.
So, let's deal with the frame features first and foremost. The Beyond+ 1 uses 4130 double butted CrMo tubing throughout and has rack and fender mounts, front and rear. The bike is fitted with a double butted CrMo ‘boost’ fork with tapered blades, and 15mm thru-axle dropouts.
There's room for three water bottles inside the frame and two on the underside of the downtube, it doesn't take a mathematician to work out that's a massive 5 water bottle carrying capacity.
It has internal cable routing throughout, not necessarily a good thing where on the fly repairs are needed and although this bike comes with a 1x11 drivetrain, you can also fit a front mech and run it as 2x if you'd prefer. There's stealth dropper post routing too if you'd rather use this as a trail bike, from the factory the bike comes with a fixed post.
The 27.5"+ tyres are 2.8" WTB Trailblazers set onto WTB i40 rims. But as well as running 29x2.5", Bombtrack also say you can fit 27.5"x3.0" tyres on the wider WTB i45 rims.
The rest of the kit has a 'trail bike' feel to it, there's that 1x SRAM NX drivetrain with a 30T front chainring to start with. It's is paired up with SRAM Level TL brakes and up in the cockpit its all Bombtrack kit, including 720mm wide bars and a stubby 55mm stem.
Geometry wise the Beyond+ 1 is certainly more 'adventure' than 'trail' but with a head angle of 69.5 degrees and a reach of 439mm on our large bike, it will certainly have a good go at taking you on a spot of singletrack fun too.
For a shelf price of £1,850 and with some good bike packing and adventure credentials behind it, the Bombtrack Beyond+1, looks set to follow in the drop barred Beyond's tyre prints and be fit for some outlandish adventures!
