If you're after an antidote to polished riding videos that are big on production values but struggle to get over the excitement of riding hard with friends, then 50:01's Wheel Love is exactly what the doctor ordered. Though, going by the acid-drenched visuals, the doctor was probably Albert Hofmann.
It's halfway between 1990's DIY skate film aesthetic and strange hippy art film, except with some truly, truly mental riding. There's everything from flat-out rock and root thrashing to some seriously huge gaps and drops, all self-shot by the 50:01 crew. It's reassuringly free of the usual 'edit' cliches, managing to get over the excitement of riding with your mates without resorting to endless slomo or pretentious voiceovers. Oh yeah, and did we mention how huge some of this stuff is?
The 50:01 crew say their "goal is to promote the connection between man and mother nature, meditation through methods of transport. Lose traction, smile and appreciate how lucky we are to have such forms of recreation. 50to01 is about balance, melt egos — don't take it too seriously and share the buzz."
High aims indeed. We're sure the ego melting bit isn't related to that strange bubbling noise at the end of the video in any way...
